William E. Hart Jr.

Bill’s CV says he’s a tax accountant but the truth seems to be that he is a bicyclist and a bicycling advocate. He earned an M.B.A. from Old Dominion in 1977; today he is a partner with the CPA firm of Finn, Gartman, Hart in Virginia Beach. Just this month (March) he passed the Certified Valuation Analyst exam. He writes: “Now I have the certification to value businesses in cases of divorces, business split-ups, estate tax issues, gift planning and personal injuries to key owners.”

Back to the bicycling. He writes, “I am working through federal, state and local lawmakers to make bicycling an alternative form of transportation. One way to do this is through having bike lanes on all newly constructed or improved roadways.”

He’s a board member of the Virginia Bicycle Federation and treasurer of the Tidewater Bicycle Federation and bikes about 50 miles a week. Last year he rode through Isabel Pass, Alaska, elevation 3,000 feet. Bill is working with W&L’s newly formed Cycling Club to get members competing in national and collegiate events, and recently members of the Washington and Lee University stayed with him in Virginia Beach and raced in a local criterium. (That’s a short race, usually on closed-off downtown city streets.) He also plays tennis about twice a week and lifts weights.

The W&L cyclists are planning a ride for Alumni Weekend – so bring your bike!

In other spheres, Bill is active in accounting and valuation organizations and is an active member in Trinity Church of Virginia Beach, a non-denominational church with an Anglican tradition.

He’s the father of three children: Catherine Greiber, 33, who went to Tidewater Community College, a receptionist; Will, 31, College of Charleston, now a financial planner;  and Valerie, 30, Boston Conservatory, a restaurant manager. He also has two grandchildren: Zachary Greiber, 9, and Madison Greiber, 2.
