Howard Capito

Since his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1970, Howard has worked in the railroad industry, the banking business, and since 2001 as a railway corporate financial adviser, doing business as Shenandoah Northern Company, specializing in short line and regional railroads in the United States.

On September 1, 2007, Howard married Mary Clark Webster, whom he met in 1966 while both were studying Russian in the Soviet Union. They live in Knoxville.

Mary, a B.A. and M.A. graduate of Boston University with a second master’s from Tufts University, specializes in international utility regulation. She has four adult children.

Howard’s two children are John (born 1978) and Katharine (1982), a 2004 W&L alumna.

His hobbies include reading Russian, Soviet and European history, geology, hiking and American railroad history.

In 1995 he received W&L’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
