After leaving W&L I went back to Cincinnati and graduated from med school in ’72.I spent six years at U.C.L.A., where I did my internship and residency in urology, finishing in 1978.

I got married in 1976 to Karen Sears, who went to U.C.L.A. and is from northern California. Having gotten a taste of the southern California lifestyle and weather, there was no way I was going back to the Midwest. I joined three other urologists in south Orange County and have practiced here ever since. We still live in the original house we bought when we moved to Laguna Beach in 1978.

Our group is now nine M.D.s and a physician’s assistant, and we moved last year into a 15,000-square-foot office. I have functioned as the chief executive of the group for the last ten years. I now see patients half time and spend the rest of my time doing administration. I have become interested in practice management and serve on the American Urological Association’s Practice Management Committee and have spoken on these matters in a number of venues.

Karen and I have two daughters, Meredith, 28, and Lauren, 25. Meredith will graduate from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in May and wants to do a residency in OB/Gyn followed by a fellowship in female infertility. Lauren will graduate from Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine in June and will be coming back to Laguna to work with the local vet.

We love to travel. I have been to New Zealand five times in the last three years to tour, speak and fly-fish. I would move there but I’m afraid it’s a little too far from the girls for Karen to follow. We are planning a trip to South America at this time.

I have had to give up golf because of chronic back problems but continue to have two or three fly fishing trips a year.
